Unemployed? A holiday job could be your ticket back to work.
Posted by brie Nov, 13, 2009 @ 8:24 am
Tis the season for employers in retail, hospitality, shipping, and a host of industry to ramp up their staff numbers in preparation for the busy holiday shopping/travel/party season. And good news for those looking for work! Holiday jobs may be temporary, they may seem beneath you, but they get you out of the house, building your skills, and networking your next permanent gig. And no, you don’t have to be a mall Santa to score a seasonal job.
The NY Times has an article that goes over the pros of getting a holiday gig even if you’re looking for a full time job. Here are some highlights:
- “Holiday hiring is more robust this year than it was in 2008.”
- “A holiday job won’t be permanent, and it may not be the work of …

Listology: 12 job-inspired Halloween costumes.
Posted by brie Oct, 23, 2009 @ 8:04 amFriday fun time! Halloween is only a week away, do you know what you’re going to be yet? If not, here are some job-inspired Halloween costumes to give you ideas. And for the love of God, since there are professionally-inspired costumes, let’s not turn everything into a slutty version of itself? You know what I mean- the slutty police officer, the slutty construction worker, the slutty phlebotomist. Avoid the urge!
1. Public Safety Workers- Fire, Police, Medical- your standard costume

(this is the ONLY pretty-much-not-slutty policewoman costume in existence.)
2. Out of Work Investment Banker- less timely this year than last year, but still topical!
(other sign board phrases include, “Will take …

Listology: 8 Tips for Managing Your Boss (b/c sometimes they need it)
Posted by brie Sep, 11, 2009 @ 8:48 amNo matter what kinds of jobs you’ve had- retail, babysitting, internships, full time jobs, etc.- there comes a time when your manager needs managing. Bosses, even the best of them, sometimes need to be managed by their subordinates, and a good subordinate knows how to do this discretely and effectively. Here are some tips for managing your boss.
But first, WHY
do you need to manage up? You need to be in control of your professional life. Managing up gives you that control. You could look at it, like Penelope Trunk does, as caring for your boss, rather than managing your boss. The more you care for them, the more they’ll care for you- in terms of giving you more responsibility, more freedom, more interesting work, and a better work life in general. And …
Listology: 9 recommended websites for job/internship searching
Posted by brie May, 23, 2009 @ 10:54 amIf you’re in the market for a job or internship, there are some MUST-USE websites for your search. They’re called meta search job sites, and they search all websites (employers, job boards, you name it, they search it) to find what you’re looking for. And my favorite part- they compile the results in a nice list, complete with the source information.
Here are my absolute favorite job search websites- I am smitten with their ability to save job seekers countless time jumping from site to site in search of jobs and internships. Go to one website and get exactly what you’re looking for.
These 2 are my favorites- they search US and international jobs, and were among the first major meta search sites and have helped me find many an internship or job for students and friends.

Listology: 7 Traits of Perfect Job Applicant, say employers (plus a bonus listology!)
Posted by brie Feb, 22, 2009 @ 8:49 pmWhat makes an employer SWOON over an entry level job candidate or internship applicant, especially during a recession? The National Association of colleges and Employers (NACE) released their Job Outlook 2009 survey which surveyed a crapload of employers and asked them: What do you look for in a job applicant? Here are the results:
70% want a high GPA: “”For most, the cutoff is 3.0—or a B average,” says Mackes. “If a student passes that hurdle, then the employer takes a look at other attributes.”
Communication skills (verbal and written)
Strong work ethic (aka, not calling out sick, not taking all your vacation days right away, and working at least a few of the 8 or so hours you’re actually in the office…)
Ability to work on a team (just like Mr. Rogers taught us)
Showing initiative (if you need an explanation …

Listology: Top 13 Job Application Killing Strategies
Posted by brie Feb, 14, 2009 @ 5:27 pmIn honor of Friday the 13th and the release of the movie’s remake, I present to you the following ways to murder, in cold blood, your job applications. Ever wonder why you don’t hear back from jobs or internships that you’ve applied to? Here are some potential reasons:
1. Murder by Word Processor. Your resume is crap. You might not think it’s crap, but apparently the people you’re sending it to think so. What causes a resume to be crap? Read on.
2. Murder by design. You have formatting mistakes- fonts that don’t match, inconsistently bolding, italicizing, or underlining, not properly spacing your resume so it’s a giant block of text, using a template to create your resume. Attention to detail is an absolute must on your resume.
3. Murder by grammar. You have content mistakes- grammatical errors, not ordering your jobs in …

Listology: 9 To-Do’s if You Think You’re Getting Laid Off
Posted by brie Jan, 31, 2009 @ 11:23 amHas your workplace become rather quiet lately? No one stepping out of line, making too much noise, afraid of the ol’ pink slip? Is your boss being extra nice to you, or oppositely, ignoring you completely? If you’re becoming paranoid, or know for sure, that layoffs are happening at your workplace, you should be preparing now. If you’re not sure, it’ll at least make you feel like you’re prepared for whatever happens. If you are sure you’re getting laid off, well you’ve just got to do these things.
1. Get a LinkedIn.com account. I’m not kidding- your Facebook is not enough. LinkedIn is strictly professional, it’s got loads of job postings, and it shows you how you are connected (through people) to those jobs. It’s free, it’s easy, and it’ll help you realize just how big your …
Listology: 8 Movies for Awesome Career Advice
Posted by brie Jan, 20, 2009 @ 7:13 am1. Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. No matter what Top Movies list I’m doing, this one is always on there. Jobs-wise, it taught us how to pull off the best non-sick sick day ever. Who out there hasn’t, at least once, put on a scratchy, tired voice to tell their boss they’re staying home that day?
2. The Godfather. What a way to run a business! This movie teaches you, albeit in a slightly illegal sense, leadership, team building, loyalty, employee satisfaction, how to get promoted, how to get fired (aka whacked), it’s fantastic! And talk about negotiation skills- we all need to know how to make somone an offer they can’t refuse. And persuasive strategies- leaving a horse’s head in their bed oughta do it. Decision making and leadership- Leave the gun, take the cannoli. I …
